The Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1) is a novel biomarker for renal diseases (designated as Kim-1 in rodents, KIM-1 in humans). The kidney injury molecule-1 is a type 1 transmembrane protein, with an immunoglobulin and mucin domain, whose expression is markedly up-regulated in the proximal tubule in the post-ischemic rat kidney but undetectable in normal kidneys. The KIM-1 ectodomain is cleaved, allowing it to be detectable in urine, and making it a great marker for renal damage.

The Rena-strip is a highly sensitive lateral-flow assay for the detection of KIM-1 (human) and Kim-1 (rat) novel biomarkers in samples from human and rat urine respectively. Many government organizations and agencies (FDA, EMA etc.) recognize KIM-1 as an excellent tool in pre-clinical study to monitor acute kidney tubular toxicity and has been shown to be the highest performing of all conventional kidney damage markers.
