Six strains of coronaviruses (CoVs) that can infect humans had previously been identified until last year. HCoV-OC43, HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, and HCoVHKU1 are not highly pathogenic and only cause mild respiratory diseases. SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV have caused two large-scale pandemics. Before efficient antiviral drugs or vaccines were developed for SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV, a new coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, China.

What is SARS-CoV-2?

SARS-CoV-2, previously known as 2019 novel coronavirus/2019-nCoV, emerged in Wuhan around November 2019 causing an outbreak of disease named COVID-19. With infections spread globally, SARS-CoV-2 was declared a pandemic outbreak by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020. The development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics is vital for the ongoing control of the outbreak. Customer Spotlight: Heparan Sulfate in COVID-19 infection

HS is emerging as a key factor in infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The JM403 Heparan Sulfate antibody from AMSBIO has been used in two novel assays developed and applied by Prof. Dr. Johan van der Vlag and colleagues at the Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, Netherlands.  The results showed that the JM403 antibody is a powerful tool to develop assays to measure plasma heparanase and HS levels in patients with COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 Spike Mutants

During the course of COVID-19 pandemic, several new SARS-CoV-2 variants have emerged, each with differing mutations that can have impacts on transmissibility, COVID-19 disease severity, and effectiveness of vaccines. AMSBIO now offers a series of recombinant antigens and pseudotyped lentivirus with key Spike mutations in order to evaluate the efficacy of antibodies and vaccines.

SARS-CoV-2 Spike VSV Delta G represents a robust model to study the mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 interaction with ACE2 (Angiotensin converting enzyme 2), to characterize neutralizing antibodies, and to screen or titrate drugs that prevent viral entry into human cells. It is the preferred pseudovirus to study SARS-CoV-2 infection of Vero-6 and Calu-3 cells.
